The tradition goes back to WWI and earlier with perhaps one of the finest example still existing in Calgary at Signal Hill, there lies Battalion numbers some 100 feet by 300 feet put down in Aug 1916.  (DND, National Archives PA204482)

Cadets operating the radar unit aboard a radar trailer on the FCE Course (Fire Control Equipment). This course lasted only a couple of years before be phased out. It is entirely possible that the low flying Piper Cub aircraft is being flown by Doug Kermode, known for his low level aerials of the camp as seen on page one of the photo gallery.
