This day in Canadian Military History...

30 July 1609
Samuel de Champlain and two companions, accompanying 60 Huron allies, confront 200 Iroquois warriors near Ticonderoga, N.Y. The Frenchmen fire their arquabuses and kill two Iroquois chiefs. The weapon instills such fear in the Iroquois that they flee in the woods, leaving a dozen prisoners.

30 July 1945
The converted troopship Ile de France leaves Britain for Canada, repatriating 7289 veterans back home. Unlike their previous crossing, the troops will enjoy a trouble-free trip as there are no U-boats threatening to sink their ship.
