Final Parade

The Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre is celebrating many milestones this year.  2009 marks the 100th Anniversary of military training on this property, the 60th Anniversary of the Cadet Training Centre, and the 100th Anniversary of the Cadet Instructors Cadre. The Canadian Forces Reserve Cadet Instructors Cadre is celebrating 100 years of service to Canada through 2009.  There are about 7,500 officers that represent the Canadian Forces from coast to coast to coast in large cities and hamlets in all regions of the country.  The Cadet Organizations, Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets are part of the Nation’s fabric because of the dedication and service of thousands of adults who took it upon themselves to lead and mentor the teenagers of their community. The anniversary is an opportunity to highlight with honour and pride the unique and special service that is provided by the largest officer occupation in the Canadian Forces. Officers, whose mission is “To instill in youth the attributes of good citizenship, and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate an interest in the sea, land, and air activities of the Canadian Forces.

The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, or ANAVETS is Canada’s oldest Veterans association with its proud history dating back to 1840.  It is a national association with provincial commands and local units in many towns and cities across Canada. ANAVETS draws its membership from CF Veterans, current members of the Canadian Forces, and any Canadian who wishes to support members of the Canadian armed forces past and present, their local communities, and this wonderful country of ours, Canada. This is the thirteenth year the Association has awarded the ANAVETS Cadet Medal of Merit, which recognizes the top Cadet during their summer training.  Consideration is given to overall achievement, leadership qualities, instructional abilities, dress and deportment, motivation and cooperation with others. A total of only 68 ANAVET Cadet medals of Merit will be presented this year for the Army, Sea and Air Cadet courses.  The recipients are in a very select group and should take pride in this significant achievement. There is a further benefit.  In addition to the medal, they will be making a draw from bursary applications from medal recipients.  The winner will receive a $1000 bursary to be applied against costs for any year at an accredited university or community college.
