This Day in Canadian Military History...

4 August 1689

1500 Iroquois warriors cross Lac St. Louis (at Montreal) and attack the settlements at Lachine, killing 24 settlers and taking almost 90 prisoners.


4 August 1814

An American strike force of 700 regulars and Ohio militia is repulsed by 150 British troops and local native allies outside Ft. Michilimackinac (confluence of lakes Michigan and Huron).


4 August 1914

Great Britain declares war on Germany; the First World War begins. Canada, as a member of the British Empire, is automatically at war.

 

4 August 1979

Vernon Army Cadet Camp marches through the streets of Vernon BC, in the first ever Freedom of the City parade for any cadet camp or cadet corps in the 100 year history of the RCAC.
