31 July 1759
General James Wolfe lands a large force at Montmorency, on the French left at Quebec, defended by entrenched French regulars and Canadian militia. As a rain storm breaks out, Wolfe orders a retreat, having lost 400 men in the battle.
31 July 1783
Members of the King's Royal Regiment of New York arrive at Cataraqui (Kingston, Ont.) as the American War of Independence is now over. The arrival of these troops, soon to be joined by family members, marks the beginning of Loyalist settlement in Canada.
