Early morning, another training day.

 

With the passing of Sgt "Smoky" Smith VC OC OBC, the camp flag is flown at half mast. Smoky Smith was the last surviving Canadian VC winner, awarded the Victoria Cross during WWII

 

The Reviewing Officer, Superintendent Don Harrison, District Officer, South East District, Kelowna, BC inspects the Quarter Guard before the Two Week Basic Graduation Parade. 

 

The second intake of basic two week cadets march past the reviewing officer.



Proudly they march past on Sicily Square, the smaller of Vernon's two large parade squares.

 

Superintendent Harrison inspects Cdt Dunszegi of 1838 Royal Westminster Regiment RC(Army)CC, Maple Ridge, BC.

 

The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Brian Martin from 2051 19th Alberta Dragoons RC(Army)CC, Edmonton AB, Best Cadet 23 Platoon.



The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Amberle Pang from 2381 British Columbia Regiment (Irish Fusiliers) RC(Army)CC, Richmond BC, Best Cadet 24 Platoon.



The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Travis Aldrich from 1712 Loyal Edmonton Regiment RC(Army)CC, Edson AB, Best Cadet 25 Platoon.



The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Karlin Su from 1809 Loyal Edmonton Regiment RC(Army)CC, Edmonton, AB, Best Cadet 26 Platoon.


The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Arron Sharpe from 1955 Service Battalion RC(Army)CC, Calgary, AB, Best Cadet 27 Platoon.



The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Larry Simms from 2509 RC(Army)CC, Calgary ,AB, Best Cadet 28 Platoon.



The Reviewing Officer awards Cdt Aden Wager from 2072 Royal Canadian Artillery RC(Army)CC, Dryden ON, Best Cadet overall for the second intake of Basic Army Cadet.



Cdt Amanda Wytinch from 3069 RC(Army)CC, St Albert, AB is presented the award for Best Shot for the second intake of Basic Army Cadet by Superintendent Harrison.


Meanwhile at the Skaha Bluffs south of Penticton, 3 Platoon is wrapping up their rock climbing with Tyrolian transfer between the bluffs 50' above the ground. (Photo: Lt Amanda Jones)

 

A not unusual summer day in Vernon, late afternoon and the temperature can be hot. Training is reduced when it gets too hot and plenty of water is consumed by all cadets.

5 August 1775
Mohawk scouts, operating from St. Jean, are fired upon by an advance party of Rebels north of Lake Champlain as a prelude to the American invasion of Canada.




5 August 1943
Canadian troops are in action for the last time on the island of Sicily. Four rifle companies from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, about 45 men, charge across 300 yards of open ground to capture Hill 736 from a force of 100 German defenders.
