The Seaforth Armoury, 1930s

The Seaforth Armoury, 1930s

Seaforth Armoury
1650 Burrard Street, Vancouver, 2005 (Phil Edge)

Located on Burrard Street is the armoury of Vancouver's Scottish regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. The impressive structure was built in 1936 with funds raised by private subscription on an old First Nations reserve in what was formerly an undeveloped part of Vancouver. During the second world war, the Seaforth Armoury was home to the Seaforth Highlander's Women's Auxiliary, which coordinated support services for the regiment. Today, the striking building continues to accommodate the Seaforth Highlander Regiment, and also houses Army and Air Cadets

History -

This Corps was formed as No 72 "The Seaforth Highlanders Cadet Battalion" (with 4 Companies) effective 8 January 1913. (The number 72 was allotted to Strathroy Collegiate Institute in the Militia List of 1904, and in Militia Order 38 forming the Seaforths in 1913, Strathroy was renumbered as No. 11.) The corps was, from the date of its formation, attached to the "72nd Seaforth Highlanders of Canada". According to Annual Inspection reports from 1969, the Corps was known as Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Cadet Corps. It was sponsored and affiliated with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada (M).

The Cadet Corps was raised in 1912 as the No. 72 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Cadet Battalion. Through the years many Seaforths who passed through the ranks of the cadets went on to illustrious careers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and business world. Of these there are many who were decorated for valour including one Victoria Cross. Others went on to command the regiment and some, like Major General B.M. Hoffmeister, Brigadier H.P. Bell-Irving, and Brigadier-General Anderson, attained General ranks. It has not been uncommon for those starting their military careers with the Seaforths to serve in excess of Forty years. One such man was Edmund Esson who spent thirty years as the Pipe Major. He joined as a cadet in 1919 and served for forty-six years. (Seaforth Highlanders Reserve official web site)
