A little luck -
Sometimes you luck out. In the winter of 1945 a locomotive ran through the CNR station with its snowplow down, destroying the entire platform. The cadet corps was allowed to salvage the heavy timbers. Mr. Lars Steiner offered us the use of a large basement under his restaurant. We constructed an excellent rifle range with heavy timbers to stop the .22 bullets. The army provided us with some fine target rifles with Martini action and .22 barrels. Many of the cadets became excellent marksmen.
The corps was a keen group and enjoyed some good training exercises both summer and winter. We were fortunate to have a Reserve officer from Lethbridge (a WW2 veteran) join us on a winter scheme.
Two of these cadets later became regular army officers - John Marles 28 Nov 2005
