OP ARCTIC OWL

Militia members and cadets huddle around naptha burners getting breakfast after spending the night in tents in the snow beside the Meduxnekeag River. In an exercise named “Operation Arctic Owl” the cadets with 89th Battery members along as mentors, camped out in a deep gravel pit upstream from Red Bridge. They practiced rappelling with supplies up and down a couple of hundred feet of steep slope buried in several feet of snow, snowshoed with full packs, web gear and bedrolls down the Meduxnekeag and conducted a mock battle for a river crossing.

Bombardier Vickie Myshrall of the 89th Battery and Captain David Powell Commanding Officer of the Woodstock Cadet corps plot a course along the Meduxnekeag for Operation Arctic Owl.

Bdr Myshrall takes an extra reef in a shoulder strap as Mike Little takes a break from slogging through breaking crust and deep snow.

Keeping the fire warm, left to right: John Furrow, Mike Little, Neil Williams, Jeff Connor and Roland Chute wait for the kettle to boil.

A couple of inches of snow over a crust just thick enough to break down under snowshoes makes heavy going on skis but on showshoes and loaded with pack, bedroll and web gear, it’s a long trek down the river. That’s Cadet John Furrow in the foreground and Jim Martin farther out on the river.

Sgt Karen Greer has a guest for lunch. That’s Cadet John Furrow in the foreground.

Hash time means a chance to unload that gear that’s been burying you in the snowdrifts all day. Left to right: Cadet furrow, Sgt. Greet and friend, Cadets Williams, Dana Smith, Cpl Heather McRitchie and Jim Martin.

Cadets Donna Rosevear, Martin Williams, Sgt Greer and Cpl McRitchie.

Breaking camp at the end of Operation Arctic Owl, cadets and 89th Battery members lug and drag a ton or so of tents, rations and other gear a couple of hundred feet to the lip of the heavily drifted gravel pit.

Bringing up the rear, MWO Francis Campbell, Acting cadet OC, reloads a capsized toboggan and fights off snow snakes as militia and cadets head for home.
