318 CADET CORPS HAS YEAR OF MANY CHANGES

This year saw a number of changes in the Woodstock High School Cadet Corps.  Until this year the Corps had been affiliated with the Carleton and York Regiment of which B Company was stationed in Woodstock .  Among the changes made in the Reserve Army Units this past year was the removal of B Company from Woodstock .  Because of this change, the Corps is now affiliated with the 89th Battery of the 12th Field Regiment.  Another change was the addition of a new instructor, Mr. J.D.Loukes, in the Corps, along with Mr. Brownrigg and Mr. Carr, who is chief instructor.

During the past year courses were given in Bren, and Rifle by Staff Sergeant Mancil Langin and a course in Wireless was conducted by Mr. Loukes.  A four day instruction on the Annual Inspection was attended at Utopia by three members of the Corps during the Easter Holidays.  The three, Sergeant Major David Jones, Lieutenant Carvel Hatfield and Major James MacLennan enjoyed the outing immensely.

The Cadet Band made its first public appearance at last year’s inspection.  This year, however, its appearance under Band Master Bragdon was enjoyed at a number of public events, including the Carousell, and the JC’s Bicycle Roadeo.  Mr. Bragdon is to be commended for the interest he takes in these boys and for the fine job he is doing with them.

The Annual Inspection of the Corps was held on the school grounds on May 13.  The Corps was inspected by Major H.T.I. MacLeod, accompanied by Capt. G.G. Ward, Cadet Training Officer, New Brunswick Area.  Accompanying the Inspecting Officer were Deputy Mayor Thomas Everett, and the Corps instructors, Major J.B. Carr, Lt. W.S.Brownrigg, Lt. J.D. Loukes, and Lt. C.G. Carmichael.

The March Pasts were conducted by James MacLennan and 2 I/C Laurence Wilson.  A number of demonstrations were then shown.

The Wireless groups consisted of David McCrea, Morris MacDonald, Claud Way , Robert Fairn, and Randolph Tompkins.  One WS19 was set up in the school to act as control and four WS58 were demonstrated in the field.

The Weapons Display was headed by Staff Langin, and taking part in it were Arthur Green, Jack McCrea, Allison Faulkner, Donald Pert, Charles Baird and Franklin Baker in the L.M.G.  The Rifle group was composed of R. MacKay, Henry Jones, Charles Murphy and Godon Jones.

The First Aid demonstration was conducted by Sgt. Major David Jones with Vernon Price, Murray Martin and Arthur Dixon taking part.

The Cadet Band played throughout the demonstrations.

LOCAL CADET TO NATIONAL CAMP

Chosen as the best in the Maritime provinces , a Woodstock young man was one of the 20 eager and excited army cadets who trained enthusiastically at Camp Aldershot in Nova Scotia early this month in preparation for the National Army Cadet Camp at Banff , Alberta .

James MacLennan, a Woodstock High graduate this year, was the local cadet chosen for the high honor.  Each corps in the Maritimes submitted the name of its best cadet, and from the list compiled, Cadet Headquarters in Halifax chose the Eastern Command representatives on strength of scholastic standing, athletic abilities, and proficiency in cadet work.  New Brunswick was allotted seven places, Nova Scotia a like number; P.E.I. two and Newfoundland four.  To be selected for this camp is the highest award available to army cadets.

The 20 cadets left Camp Aldershot on July 12, accompanied by Capt. G.H. Parsons of Halifax and Lieut. Clair Collins of Port Elgin.  On their arrival at Banff they mixed with 240 representatives from the Quebec , Central Prairie, and Western Commands.  The camp opened on July 15 and will continue until August 17.  The program includes one week of military training, one week of sightseeing, a week’s bivouac, and lots of sports.
