CADETS CORPS ACTIVITIES

The 318 Woodstock High School Cadet Corps started out the year late due to the delayed opening of school.  At that time the corps was under the supervision of Chief Instructor, J.B.Carr, and Assistant Instructor W.S. Brownrigg, and Lt. Glen Carmichael and Sgt John Cody, both of the Carleton and York Regiment.  The first three of these remained instructors throughout the year.

During the first  term, a church parade was held under the command of Major Carr to St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where the service was conducted by the Rector Rev. H.L. Nutter.

On Nov. 11the, the Corps participated in the Remembrance Day parade to the Cenotaph.

Early in the new term, Sgt. Cody resigned as Sgt. Instructor.  At a party for the Officers, N.C.O.’s and instructors a small gift was presented to him by the O.C. in appreciation of his aid in organizing and training the Corps.

The Corps was pleasantly surprised to receive new “battledress” uniforms in the early spring months.  These replaced the old serge uniforms which had seen many better days.  They were also issued Carleton and York shoulder flashes and beret badges.

On May 10the, the Annual Inspection was held at 1430 hours behind the High School  After marching to the Armoury and returning with the Carleton and York Regimental Band under the direction of Bandmaster B.L. Bragdon, the Corps formed up under the following Officers and N.C.O.’s.  Company Commander Major Mac Jones, Second-in-Command, Captain Ralph Robinson; Platoon Commanders, Lt. Daryl Flinn, Lt. Gordon VanWart, Platoon Sergeants, Sgt. Richard Leech, Sgt. Wallace Jones; Company Sgt. Major, Robert Jones.

During the inspection the Cadet Flag which was won by the Corps at their annual inspection last year, was presented to the Corps by the inspecting officer.  This beautiful flag is white with a Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner.  In the centre is the red maple leaf, the symbol of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.  At the bottom is the number of the Cadet Corps.  The members of the Flag Party were Lt. Norman Bel, Flag Bearer; Sgt. John Dickison, Guard; Sgt. David Mcrea, Guard.

The actual presentation ceremony was very impressive.  The Flag Party Officer received the Flag and to the tune of O Canada he slow marched the Flag back to the ranks.  The flag is now the property of the Corps.

The Inspecting Officer was the N.B. Area Commander, Brig. T.Eric Snow.  He was accompanied by Major Chester McCrea and Lt. T.L. Williams, area Cadet Officer.  After the Inspection programme, demonstrations of the Cadet work were given.  They were Bren Gun, Sten Gun, Rifle and Wireless and Map Reading.  After the programme, Brig. Snow spoke to the Corps and complimented them on the fine showing that they had made.

On June 2nd the Corps, complete with flag party, participated in the local Coronation Day Parade.  On June 11th, having turned in their uniforms, the cadets were treated to ice-cream for their good showing on Inspection Day and on June 2nd.

Four members of the Cadet Corps are going to the Area Cadet Camp at Aldershot this summer.  They are Major Mac Jones, Sgt. Richard Leech and David McCrea and Cadet Malcolm Campbell.

The Commanding Officer of the Corps, Major Mac Jones, wishes to take this opportunity to publicly thank his Officers, NCO’s and Instructors and the Bandmaster and his band for their support.  Most of all he wishes to thank the Cadets themselves for working so hard to put on a good show each time that they were in public.  He wishes them the best of luck in the future years.
