CADET INSPECTION FRIDAY AFTERNOON

 

The annual inspection of the Woodstock High School cadets will be held next Friday at 3 o’clock on the school grounds.  In case of inclement weather the display will be held in the Armoury.

 

The inspecting officers will be Major A.H. Fraser and Lieut. K.C. Crook from the staff of the N.B. Military Area Headquarters, Fredericton .

 

The corps is under the Command of Vincent Kelly, with Bud Hood, second-in-command.  The platoon officers are Basil Kilpatrick and Arthur Atherton with the platoon sergeants, MacPhail Jones and Chipman Hamilton.  The C.S.M. is Kenneth Atkinson.

 

The program will include Receiving the Inspecting Officer; Inspection of the corps in open ranks position; March Past under corps Comdr. Vincent Kelly; March Past in column of route under 2 i/c Ross Hood; corps the placed in open formation for physical training display.  Demonstrations of various cadet activities:  First Aid, Bren gun, Sten gun, “Walkie-Talkie” signals, knots and lashes, etc.  The corps reassembles and forward in review order and finally the remarks of inspecting officer and dismissal.

 

The public generally and particularly those interested in the cadet training are urged to be present on Friday afternoon and view the inspection.

NO. 318 W.H.S. CADET CORPS INSPECTION

 

The annual inspection of he Woodstock High School No. 318 Cadet Corps was held on Friday afternoon, May 12, on the school grounds.  Prior to the inspection by Major A.H. Fraser and Lieut. K.C. Cook of the N.B. Military Area H.Q. staff, the cadets paraded through town anyone who saw them, smartly decked out in their uniforms could not help but be proud of them.

 

The corps was under the command of Vincent Kelly, with Bud Hook, second-in-command.  The platoon officers were Basil Kilpatrick and Arthur Atherton with the Platoon sergeants MacPhail Jones and Chipman Hamilton and the C.Q.M.S. Kenneth Atkinson.

 

Opening the afternoon program, the corps gave the general salute upon the entrance of the Inspecting Officer.  The inspection was carried out with the corps in open ranks formation.  Others taking part in the inspection were Lt. Col. W.P. Steen, Capt. R. Jelbert, Major C.H. Murphy, Lt. G. Carmichael, Lt. R. Wilson, Major J.B. Carr.

 

Following the march past the cadets gave a P.T. display with 2 i/c Ross Hood as demonstrator.  The cadets then returned to their ranks and divided into the following demonstration groups:  First Aid and Knot Tying, Sgt. MacPhail Jones, Cadets Reg. Lindsay, R. Mantell, F. MacDonald, D. Miller, R. Montgomery, R. Smith, D. Cox, V. MacFawn, G. McLellan, G. Mollins and D. Strong; Bren and Sten, Cadet Cmdr V. Kelly, 2 i/c Ross Hood, Pln Cmdrs Atherton, Kilpatrick, C.Q.M.S. Atkinson, cadets R. Jones, P. Folkins, G. Van-Wart, R. Robinson, V. Foster, P. Bell, H. Thornton, C. Robinson, W. Kitchen, G. Slipp, R. Foren and G. McKinley; Signals: C.S.M. Calkin, cadets D. Nason, R. Hibbert, R. Phillips, C. Troy, D. Hersey, J. Faulds, J. Lockwood, J. Baird, a. McLean, B. Connell, F. Webb, T. Nickerson, and R. Wilson.

 

After the demonstrations, the corps formed up in line facing the saluting base and presentations of shooting award badges was made by Major A.H. Fraser.  The following received badges:  Expert Shote; Corps Cmdr Kelly, C.Q.M.S. Atkinson, Pln Cmdr Kilpatrick, Cadet Foren;  Marksman; Cadet Reginald Lindsay: First Class Shots; Pln Sgt. Jones, cadets D. Cox, J. Faulds, G. Mollins, D. Nason, M. Nickerson, T. Nickerson, C. Robinson, R. Smith, H. Thornton and F. Webb.

 

In his remarks to the Corps which followed the presentations, Major A.H. Fraser stated how proud he was and the honor he felt in inspecting the Woodstock cadets.  “I have seen all the different types of cadets and troops during my time in the service,” he said, “but I highly compliment this group on their steadiness in rank during all manoeuvres.  This group has the marks of a well disciplined corps.”

 

During his address Major Fraser praised the corps displays and smartness in marching.   He spoke of the Cadet Camp being  held at Aldershot this fall and expressed the hope that several cadets from Woodstock would be attending this camp.

 

Lt. Col. W.P. Steen, O.C. of the Carleton and York Regiment, with which the Cadet Corps is affiliated, addressed the cadets briefly, complimenting them on their fine showing and impressive marching.

 

Mayor M.Craig spoke to the gathering and expressed his pride in watching the youth of Woodstock as they went through their various demonstrations and displays.

 

Others taking part in the inspection of displays were: E.R. Jones, Chairman of the Woodstock Board of School Trustees, Percy Fillmore, Chairman of Cadet Committee of Woodstock, and G.W. Slipp.

 

The Corps for the past few weeks has been under the charge of Sgt. A. Doucette of the Cadet Training Staff, Fredericton .

RESERVE UNIT, CADETS, ON RANGE

 

Troops of B Company, Carleton & York Regiment and of the local Cadet Corps spent Sunday, May 14 on the local range in Grafton, where firing of the Bren light machine gun was carried out.  The work covered on this particular Sunday was the first of a program that is to be carried out within the next three Sundays.

 

The program as outlined by the O.C. B Company, Major Murphy, is as follows:

Sunday, May 14th: - Firing L.M.G. (Bren) practices.

Sunday, May 21st – Firing .303 rifle practices.

Sunday, May 28th – Demonstration of the fire power of an infantry Platoon.  Demonstration on the practical application of fieldcraft.  Firing the P.L.A.T. for the 2” Mortar.

Sunday, June 4th – Firing the Sten Machine Carbine.

 

Troops of the Hartland Platoon were present along with the Cadets.  The Company congregated at the range at 11 a.m.   Lunch was served at 11:45 a.m. , the catering being taken care of by H.R. Franklin.  (Whoa Daddy).  Firing commenced at 12:30 and was completed by 3:30 p.m.   Each man fired 70 rounds, 50 of those to count.  The other 20 were practice shoots.

 

For the purposes of this instructional Range work the pass mark is a total of 40 points.

During the afternoon the troops were visited by Lieut. Col. W.P. Steen, Officer Commanding Carleton  & York Regiment at Fredericton .  He was accompanied by Capt. Rene Jalbert (R22R) of the Administrative and Training Staff of New Brunswick Area.  Other members of the range party were: Major Murphy, Capt. Frank Fewer, Lieut. Glen Carmichael, Lieut. Little, C.S.M.I. Bert Hovey, (A & T Staff, Fredericton ), C.SM. Ronald Hawkins, Sgt. E.H. Glass, Sgt. Scott and C.Q.M.S. Les Delong.

 

It was pointed out by Major Murphy that the schedule for next Sunday and the following Sundays will be the same, except for the actual range work.  The Cadets who wish to attend are to report to the Armoury at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday.
