This is a course providing excellent opportunity for Royal Canadian Army Cadets.  Those gaining officers standing have their names submitted to Ottawa immediately on joining the Army, Navy or Air forces and as soon as there is an opening are sent to O.T.C. School where they graduate Second Lieutenants while those with Sergeants standing are admitted to a school for sergeants.

CADETS LEAVE FOR UTOPIA

On Monday, July 9, the Woodstock Cadets left for Utopia.  They gave a splendid showing when they marched through town on their way to the station.  Capt. Allen Donaldson was in charge of the Woodstock Cadets.  Sgt. Major Craig saw that the twenty- four cadets got safely aboard the special train.  The train started at Edmundston picking up 24 cadets then on to St. Leonards where 15 more were added, next thirteen from Plaster Rock.  Between Bath and Woodstock more were accounted for.

The boys were all full of life and gave a great cheer as they pulled out of the station for Utopia.

CADETS RETURN HOME AFTER ATTENDING CAMP

By Capt. Allen Donaldson

The Annual Cadet Camp beginning July 9, was held in Utopia , C.A. (L) T.C.  The train left Woodstock at 9:50 a.m.   Dinner was served at McAdam and immediately afterwards one of the Cadets from St. Leonards had a heart attack and swallowed his tongue.  We passed through Fairville and then on to Utopia, arriving about 8 o’clock .

Woodstock , along with St. Vincent High, Saint John , made up No. 1 platoon D. coy.  Major O’Leary was company commander, Capt. Jack Stevens, 2ic and C.S.M. and Capt. Allen Donaldson No.1 platoon commander.

Friday we were taken out on a 7 mile route march.  We didn’t mind seven too much but then we were told that we could have come to the same spot by a ¾ mile march.  That evening we were shown the flame thrower in action and taken for a ride in a universal carrier.

Tuesday we fired the 303 rifle.  Charles Caldwell from Woodstock was the Camp character and being only 4ft 8 inches he didn’t like the idea.  However he climbed haltingly up the mound, laid down, took aim, squeezed the trigger and climbed back up the mound.  Despite his size he recorded three bulls eyes surprising everyone concerned including himself.

Tuesday night we were taken out to the range and were given a demonstration of the firing of the 6 pounder anti-tank and 3 in. mortar.

Wednesday was the big day, the day of inspection.  The inspecting officer was Brig. Anglin accompanied by two V.S. officers, Brig. Gen. Carter and Col. Stephanson.  All were agreed that the battalion made an excellent showing.  Although D coy was not the best company, instructors were all of the opinion that No. 1 platoon ( Woodstock and St. Vincent ) was by far the best in the battalion.

Thursday we broke camp and left Friday morning at 3:30 a.m. after saying goodbye to our friends and fellow cadets from St. Vincent whom we are looking forward to seeing next year.

Those attending from Woodstock were: Capt. Allen Donaldson, Lieut. James Calkin, Sgt. Robert Flewwelling, Sgt. Robert Tellenback, Sgt. Richard Brown, St. Major Jack Mooers, Corp. Allison Troy, Corp. Byron Troy, Crop. John Harrington, Corp. Blake MacEachron, Pte. Garnet Foster, Pte. Arthur Atherton, Pte. Robert Smith, Pte. Thomas Simms, Pte. Kenneth Atkinson,  Pte. Ernest Glass, Pte. Fred Brown, Pte. Charles Caldwell, Pte. Wendell Cummings, Pte. Russel Morecraft, Pte. Rnald McGuire, Pte Richard Hamilton, Pte. Ronald Atherton.  All are agreed that we had a swell time, thanks to the Army.
