#1292 Cadet Corps

2006

1292 currently has 3 lances, once for each of it’s 3 troops.  Our first lance was donated by the Regiment (a long while ago) .  the Lance is inscribed “check tonight what it actually says”  and is a gift from the allied Regiment  the 17/21 Lancers to the Strathconas'.  It differs from the other two in that it is of oak rather than bamboo.  It currently is the lance for One Troop.

3 Troop’s lance was given to the Corps on a visit to the Regiment by the (then) Commanding Officer Lt. Col Jamie Cade. In January 2004.    He had been our reviewing officer the year before at the ACR  and noted that we had one lance and two troops and as he put it” I like thing’s symmetrical”  He took the lance from the Hallway in the Strathcona lines and presented to the Corps  there.  The lance is of Bamboo.

The lance for Two Troop has an interesting background. Originally is was used by Strathcona regular forces for parade drill at Fort Beauséjour in Iserlohn , Germany . While serving with the Strathconas in Germany , RSM Harry Graham gave WO Jack Downey the lance for recognition of his contribution as trainer of the winning tank team during the Canada Cup competition of 1967. For over 30 years the lance remained on display at the Downey residence.

In 2004, WO Downey’s grandson, 1292 Strathconas Cadet Grant Higginson donated the lance to the Corps on behalf of his grandfather to ensure the lance remained in the possession of the Strathconas. Currently   Cadet Cpl. Higginson is assigned to Two Troop and has had the privilege of being their marker and is learning lance drill with his grandfather’s lance. This lance is also made of bamboo.

When not on parade, the lances sit in a display in the orderly room in front of the large Strathconas' crest that the Regiment Painted for the Corps in 2004.

Now if we could just find the famous missing swords.
